Delaware County Celebrates Older Americans Month This May

Media, PA — Delaware County is proud to honor the thousands of older residents who enrich our communities every day with their time, talent, and life experience. While their contributions are valued year-round, May provides a special opportunity to recognize their impact during National Older Americans Month.

First established in 1963, Older Americans Month honors the vitality, independence, and enduring contributions of older adults across the country. This year’s national theme “Champion Your Health” focuses on prevention, wellness, and personal responsibility as cornerstones of healthy aging. It encourages residents to take an active role in managing their own health, advocating for themselves, accessing preventative care, and making informed decisions that support independence.

“In Delaware County, we are proud to empower our older residents to champion their health by providing support, resources, and opportunities that allow them to thrive,” said Delaware County Council Chair Richard Womack. “Whether it’s through COSA’s services, events like the Centenarian Luncheon and Senior Games, or daily community engagement, we want every older adult to know they are seen, valued, and celebrated.”

Nearly one in four Delaware County residents is age 60 or older, and County Council proudly celebrates the vital role older adults play in every aspect of community, from leading nonprofit organizations and mentoring youth, to supporting faith communities, volunteering, and contributing to the workforce. Today’s seniors are actively shaping the future by embracing new opportunities, sharing their wisdom, and redefining what it means to age with purpose and strength.

“Older Americans Month gives us the opportunity to uplift the incredible older adults who are leaders in their neighborhoods, role models to younger generations, and contributors to every aspect of our Delaware County community,” said Delaware County Council Vice Chair Christine Reuther “This year’s theme reminds us that the health of our residents is critical to our shared success and we should do everything possible to support them.”

Through their leadership, service, and continued engagement, older adults in Delaware County are helping build a more resilient, connected future for all residents. By honoring and supporting Delco’s older residents, Delaware County is building a better future for everyone.
