Summary

The Chaplain is responsible for spiritual guidance and education to the incarcerated persons population and staff when needed. 

 

Examples of Duties (Illustrative Only)

  • Plan, direct, and coordinate all aspects of religious programming including approval and training of both lay and clergy volunteers.
  • Provide forty (40) hours of program services weekly. 
  • Provide and update religious program for presentation to newly arrived incarcerated persons which orient them to the Chaplain’s office and current religious services and programs. 
  • Ensure that all religious programs are in compliance with Title 37 and ACA standards. 
  • Recruit volunteers throughout the community to participate in administering religious programming to the incarcerated person population.
  • Coordinate with the Training Department training times for all volunteers for both orientation and annual training as needed per facility standards. 
  • Ensure all volunteers complete the application process and facilitate the collection of all necessary paperwork to include background checks when applicable. 
  • Establish and maintain close relationships with community religious resources and approve donations of equipment or materials for use in religious programs. 
  • Ensure the facility volunteer list is up to date at all times. 
  • Schedule NA/AA services for the incarcerated person population. 
  • Submit information monthly as needed for various departments. 
  • Provides counseling services for those who may have had a death in immediate family while incarcerated. 
  • Verifies all death in family calls and notification within the facility. 
     

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies

  • Must have accredited Clinical Pastoral Education or equivalent specialized training. 
  • Must have endorsement from community religious congregation. 
  • Ability to work effectively with varying cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

Working Environment

Standard jail facility and office environment. Incumbent may be involved in sitting and walking at will, walking/standing and/or sitting for long periods, lifting/ carrying heavy objects, crouching/kneeling, bending at the waist, close and far vision, reaching, handling/ grasping/fingering objects, hearing sounds/communication. Incumbent is frequently exposed to the hazards associated with jail operations, such as potentially violent individuals and communicable disease. No prolonged extreme physical demands are associated with normal duties or assignments.
