Delaware County Celebrates National Correctional Officers & Employees Week May 3-9
George W. Hill Correctional Facility to host events throughout the week
Media, PA — Delaware County is proud to honor correctional officers and employees who play a vital role in protecting the safety of incarcerated persons and the public at George W. Hill Correctional Facility and elsewhere. While their contributions are valued year-round, the first full week of May provides a special opportunity to recognize their impact during National Correctional Officers & Employees Week.
Established in 1984 as National Correctional Officers Week before being expanded and renamed National Correctional Officers and Employees Week in 1996, it honors the courage and professionalism of correctional officers who protect the public and help prepare incarcerated individuals for reentry into society.
“Our corrections staff play a crucial role caring for incarcerated persons at George W. Hill while keeping us all safe,” said Delaware County Council Chair Richard Womack. “I’m eager to celebrate the hard work of our staff this week and hope we continue to recognize the importance of their work moving forward.”
Throughout the week there will be events at George W. Hill, starting on Monday, May 4 with the theme Health, Wellness & Self Care: “Better Me = Better We.” This will include resources about physical wellness from the Delaware County Health Department, mental health resources, financial wellness resources from Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union and Primerica Financial Services, and more. Tuesday will have international food trucks for the theme Celebrating Our Diversity with roll-call awards, food trucks, free water ice and pretzels, and raffles. Wednesday is Recognition & Engagement Day – Honoring Our Legacy, which will begin with a memorial service, followed by staff awards & recognition and raffles. Thursday will feature a staff barbecue with the theme Team Building – Together, We Win including roll-call awards, catered barbecue, raffles, and more. The finale comes on Friday with Best of the Best – GW Hill Food, Fun & Festivities where there will be a department potluck, games, contests, competitions, free water ice and pretzels, DJ entertainment, and more raffles.
“Without our highly skilled staff and their commitment to maintaining secure, safe, and humane correctional environments, George W. Hill wouldn’t be able to operate as well as it does,” said Delaware County Council member and Jail Oversight Board Chair Joanne Phillips. “I applaud the work that our staff has done focusing on professionalism, accountability, and reintegration into society for our incarcerated persons.”
