The Delaware County Health Department (DCHD) is thrilled to share its latest initiative to alleviate food insecurity in Delaware County. DCHD is currently accepting applications from local non-profit organizations interested in purchasing cold storage equipment for food pantries. This initiative is funded through DCHD’s grant with the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Applications will be accepted while funds last.

Cold storage of perishable food is crucial for feeding people in areas with limited access to supermarkets, known as food deserts. Delaware County’s food pantries are pivotal in reducing barriers to fresh and healthy foods. By helping Delaware County communities secure cold storage equipment, DCHD can help prevent spoilage and extend the availability of healthy food to residents. Appropriate cold storage not only helps cut down on food waste but also prevents foodborne illnesses.

“DCHD’s Community Health Assessment findings highlighted the need to address food scarcity and access barriers,” said Delaware County Health Department Director Melissa Lyon. “Supporting our community organizations with cold storage equipment enables Delaware County pantries to reach more residents, promote healthy food choices, and bring communities together.”

To be considered for this program, organizations must demonstrate they meet criteria related to vulnerability, community engagement, infrastructure, sustainability, cost, and tax-exempt status. Details for cold storage equipment award criteria and how to apply can be found on DCHD’s website at: https://delcopa.gov/health/pdf/Cold_Storage_Criteria.pdf.

The Health Resources and Services Administration, Department of Health and Human Services provided financial support for this project. The award provided 100% of total costs and totaled approximately $60,000 for this project.
