Route 291: A Safer Path Forward

Route 291 is a vital transportation corridor in Delaware County, connecting residents to jobs, schools, and other destinations. But for too long, it has also been a dangerous place for motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists.

That's why the Delaware County Department of Planning is completed a study to improve safety along Route 291. We gathered input from the public and stakeholders, and we developed a preferred alternative that will make a significant difference.

Our proposed changes include:

  • A multi-use path for bicyclists and pedestrians, connecting residents to the waterfront and other destinations in Chester.

  • A reduced number of lanes along some portions of the road, to reduce speeds and improve safety.

  • Improved pedestrian safety measures such as pedestrian refuges and countdown signals.

Once the final plan is adopted, we will post it online! We're excited to start working on the next phase of this project, Redesigning Route 291, and we look forward to working with the community to make it a reality.
