The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law established the SMART Grants Program for smart community technology demonstrations. The SMART Grants Program funds projects that focus on using technology interventions to solve real-world challenges facing communities, always with a focus on purpose-driven innovation and supporting technologies that provide clear, near-term benefits. USDOT expects to award approximately 30 Stage 1 grants of up to $2,000,000 in this round. There is an anticipated minimum award size of $250,000.
The SMART Grants Program funds multiple technology areas, listed below. Projects must demonstrate at least one technology area and may demonstrate more than one technology area. USDOT will evaluate each application on its merits, and there is no expectation that applications demonstrate more than one technology area.
USDOT will host a “How to Apply” webinar for prospective applicants on Tuesday, May 28, 2024 from 1:00 to 2:00 PM ET (register here). The webinar will be recorded and posted on the SMART Grants website within several business days.
Visit the SMART Grants Program website to access the NOFO and learn about eligibility, application submission processes, and illustrative use cases.
