Judge Stephanie Klein was elected to a ten-year term on the Court of Common Pleas of Delaware County in November 2019. She currently is assigned to the Family Law Division.
Prior to her election to the bench, Judge Klein served as Magisterial District Judge for the Delaware County municipalities of Media, Nether Providence, and Swarthmore. She was first elected to that position in 1995 and served for 18 years and then served an additional two years as a Senior Magisterial District Judge.
Judge Klein began her legal career as a legal services lawyer in Maryland, primarily assisting Vietnam-era veterans. After moving to Delaware County, she clerked for the Honorable Edward S. Lawhorne of the Delaware County Court of Common Pleas. She then went to work for Delaware County Legal Assistance (now Legal Aid of Southeastern Pennsylvania) coordinating its pro bono lawyer program. After serving as District Judge, Judge Klein served as a mediator and arbitrator until her election to the bench. She was also a member of the Hearing Committee of the Disciplinary Board of the PA Supreme Court.
Judge Klein has been an active member of the Delaware County Bar Association for over three decades. She co-founded its Women in the Law Committee. She served three separate terms on the Bar Association’s Board of Directors and at various times, chaired the Pro Bono and District Judge Committees. The Bar Association has awarded her the Paul Sand Award and the President’s Award for her efforts to promote pro bono work in the profession. In 2018, she was awarded a special Bar President’s award for her work on behalf of women in the profession. Prior to her election, Judge Klein served on the Boards of Directors of Legal Aid of Southeastern Pennsylvania and the Domestic Abuse Project.
Judge Klein is a graduate of Washington College of Law, American University and Binghamton University (formerly SUNY Binghamton).
