October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time for Delaware County to unite in raising awareness about the profound impact of domestic violence and to honor the courage and resilience of survivors. Domestic violence affects individuals across all demographics—people of all ages, genders, races, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Nationally, 24 people per minute are victims of rape, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner. These aren’t just statistics; they represent real people and families, many of whom are right here in our community.
Delaware County is deeply committed to providing support and resources to survivors of domestic abuse. In 2022, County Council partnered with District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer to establish the Domestic Violence Prevention Task Force, a collaborative effort designed to strengthen countywide initiatives aimed at preventing domestic violence and improving support services for survivors.
This October, Delaware County will once again demonstrate its commitment through several key initiatives. On October 24, the community will come together for a vigil led by the Domestic Abuse Project of Delaware County (DAP), in partnership with County leadership and local survivors. The vigil will honor the victims of domestic violence and celebrate the strength and resilience of survivors. Participants will hear powerful survivor stories and updates from the Task Force, underscoring the importance of ongoing community engagement.
Additionally, the Delaware County Courthouse will be illuminated in purple, a symbol of the County's steadfast dedication to raising awareness and preventing abuse. The lighting serves as a reminder of the ongoing need to support survivors and address the root causes of domestic violence.
The Domestic Abuse Project of Delaware County continues to play a vital role in this mission. DAP offers essential services such as victim advocacy, child advocacy, crisis counseling, and emergency shelter. DAP operates a 24-hour crisis hotline—available at (610) 565-4590—to ensure that help is accessible whenever it’s needed.
This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Delaware County also acknowledges the tireless work of advocates, service providers, and organizations who are dedicated to supporting survivors and holding abusers accountable. Their efforts are crucial in ensuring that Delaware County remains a safe and supportive place for all.
