Released: August 26, 2020

Delaware County is seeking to fill a vacancy to the Hero Scholarship Fund Board.

The Hero Scholarship Fund is a nonprofit corporation founded in 1977 to provide educational scholarships to the children of police officers and firefighters who have died or were killed in the line of duty. 36 children have received educational benefits from the Hero Scholarship Fund and there are additional children who are eligible for future scholarships. Currently, each recipient receives the sum of $15,000.00 per semester.

A major source of funding for the Hero Scholarship is the Annual Hero Bowl, which is held every spring. The Hero Bowl teams consist of 90 football players from across Delaware County and are chosen by the Delaware County Football Coaches Association. Cheerleaders are also chosen to participate. The game also includes a relay race of high school runners from Delaware County.

Another major source of funding is the Annual Springfield Run for Heroes which is held in the fall of each year. In addition, jurors in Delaware County may choose to donate their juror stipend to the Hero Scholarship Fund.

The Hero Scholarship Fund is managed by a nine-member Board of Directors appointed by the Delaware County Council for three-year terms. The Board of Directors meets quarterly in March, June, September and December.
