Summary

This position reports directly to the Captain and Major of Security within the facility. The position is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all locking systems and locking devices within the facility and throughout the facility property. This includes (and is not limited to) doors, grills, gates, sally port gates, and yard gates. Such devices may include tracks, bearings, drive chains, electric motors, gear drives, computerized/digital locking system and bushings in addition to the residential and industrial type locking devices.

The Locksmith will be responsible for all key/tool control and inventories within the facility. This includes review and observation of all key control policies and procedures, knowledge, operations, and troubleshooting of KeyWatcher Systems such as Morse, knowledge of digital reporting systems such as offender/jail management applications, assistance in control and accountability of all restricted/emergency keys, duplication and maintenance of all keys, and assistance in the successful compliance of audits and inspections.

Reports directly to the Investigators, Lead Investigators, and Director of Internal Affairs within George W. Hill Correctional Facility. The Intelligence Analyst serves as a member of the Internal Affairs Department and is responsible for reviewing computer- based systems, gathering information relevant to cases, and reviewing materials associated with ongoing investigations within the correctional facility.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Diagnose operational problems in locks and locking systems.

Install, replace, open, clean, repair, and perform preventative maintenance on locks for doors, gates, desks, file cabinets, lockers and various other furniture and equipment.

Install, repair, and maintain electronic locking systems.

Change lock combinations, perform mechanical keying or rekeying.

Disassemble, clean, and repair locks. Open locks using lock picking tools, dismantling, or other methods.

Take measurements and cut materials to exact specifications for replacement of lock hardware. Follow specifications for the installation of complex lock systems.

Make new or duplicate keys utilizing a key cutting machine. Stamp appropriate codes on keys and index accordingly. Set-up and install key cores and cylinders for various types of locksets.

Maintain accurate accounting of hard keys and key cores using computerized key management software.

Maintain grand master, master, & sub-master key system integrity.

Develop forms/logs and conduct audits routinely for key and tool control.

Maintains integrity and confidentiality.

Performs other duties as assigned by the Warden.


Minimum Requirements

High School Diploma or GED; College degree highly desirable

1 year experience in investigation or intelligence. (combination of experience and education may be considered)

Knowledge of basic investigative procedures and practices.

Knowledge of applicable agency policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.

Skilled in written and verbal language.

Must possess good problem-solving abilities and strong analytical abilities.

Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.

Flexibility in work schedule and days off when necessary.

Ability to write reports and correspondence and to speak effectively before groups of employees.

Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.

Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with professionalism and discretion.

Working Conditions

Standard jail facility and office environment. Incumbent performs duties in a jail facility which may involves sitting and walking at will, walking/standing and/or sitting for long periods, lifting/ carrying heavy objects, crouching/kneeling, bending at the waist, close and far vision, reaching, handling/ grasping/fingering objects, hearing sounds/communication. Incumbent is frequently exposed to the hazards associated with jail operations, such as potentially violent individuals and communicable disease.
