The Office of the Medical Examiner: The office of the Medical Examiner is a 24-hour environment responsible for determining the cause and manner of deaths that fall under its jurisdiction. The Medical Examiner’s Office investigates deaths due to Homicide, Suicide, Accident, Death in police custody, Sudden Unexplained Infant Death, and other deaths deemed suspicious.

Indigent Coordinator/ Grief Counselor: Provides supportive services to help meet the needs of family members of deceased individuals that fall under the jurisdiction of the Medical Examiner’s Office. Develop educational programs and materials for families regarding loss, grief, and coping with bereavement.


DUTIES OF POSITION

The functions of this job will include, but are not limited to the following:

Provide information about the medical examiner’s office and their loved ones to the family as soon after the death as possible. Help find burial, internment arrangements, or obtain cremations for indigent persons. Verify Veteran’s status with the Veterans association and determine eligibility for anatomical gift association and other organizations for donation as necessary. Connect family members directly after the autopsy to relay information. Locate next-of-kin and contact family members to notify them of the decedent’s death and see if family members are willing to provide funeral arrangements. Provide crime victim resources to families of decedents who died of violent means and help their families sign up for crime victim compensation. Work with the lawyers at probate court to determine if the decedent has no legal next-of-kin. Get indigent decedents ready for the county cremation process.

QUALIFICATIONS

High school graduate or equivalent. Ability to learn and interpret court orders. Strong math and organizational skills. Must be detail-oriented for investigative work on cases.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Normal good health

Ability to function in highly stressful situations

Ability to sit for long periods of time.

Ability to deal with people who are upset, irate, and or hostile
