Summary

The Immunization Public Health Nurse is responsible for providing professional nursing services in clinics, homes and communities to ensure effective health promotion and disease prevention services and other public health department duties as assigned.


Essential Duties

Assessing patients’ health histories to identify any health issues that may make vaccination unsafe.

Providing information regarding vaccines to patients, parents, and other healthcare providers.

Administering vaccines according to established guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or other organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

Recording information about each patient’s vaccination history in a chart or database.

Educating patients about the risks and benefits of vaccines and other methods of disease prevention.

Coordinating with other members of the healthcare team, including physicians, social workers, and pediatricians.

Maintaining accurate records of patient visits and vaccinations.

Scheduling appointments and keeping track of patient records to ensure that patients receive the appropriate immunizations on time.

Inventory management and transport of vaccine(s) and maintaining the cold chain

Proper biohazardous waste transport and disposal

Maintains appropriate infection control standards and precautions

Supporting DCHD’s Communicable Disease team in disease investigation surveillance, including following up on reports of illnesses with patients, laboratories, and health professionals following state protocols.


Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing (BSN)

Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN), issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing

Community or Public Health experience

Current CPR / First Aid certification

Strong verbal and written communication skills

Pediatric experience a plus

Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a background check

Ability to interact appropriately and effectively with a wide range of persons

Ability to maintain and handle confidential information

Ability to follow protocol, procedures, and established guidelines

Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing circumstances and needs

A strong work ethic and ability to manage a demanding and changing workload


*The selected candidate will be required to obtain, at their own expense, 3 forms of clearance, including PA State Police Criminal History Record Check; PA Child Abuse History; and FBI Criminal History Background Check including finger printing prior to employment.

**Delaware County requires all DCHD employees be up to date for their COVID-19 vaccination. Proof of vaccination must be submitted before a candidate’s start date if hired.
