The County of Delaware moved from a Corner system to a Medical Examiner in the 1970s. The County is looking for a Chief Medical Examiner who will work with the Administrator of the Medical Examiner’s Office to build the department into a state of the art, accredited, modern system. The Medical Examiner’s Office operates under a facility Administrator allowing the Chief Medical Examiner to concentrate on forensic pathology services.
Under the general oversight of the Administrator, the Chief Medical Examiner will:
Serve as the executive medical officer for death investigations
Perform postmortem forensic examinations to determine manner and cause of death in medical examiner cases
Collaborate on cases with the per diem Pathologists, the Chief Forensic Investigator along with the Forensic Investigations unit, and the autopsy technicians
Assist in providing guidance to rotating medical students and interns from the local universities and colleges
Perform approximately 250 autopsies per year
Complete death certificates
Provide expert testimony in court
Manage and direct needed consultants when needed for forensic pathology services
Must be licensed as a Physician by the State Medical Board
Must be board certified, as recognized by the American Board of Pathology, in Forensic Pathology
Demonstrated knowledge of principles, practices, techniques and advances in the area of forensic pathology and medicolegal death certification
