Shift: Office hours 8:30am - 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday


Summary

The Autopsy Technician prepares for autopsies and the dissection of bodies, including evisceration and removal of the brain, separation of organ blocks and special dissection techniques, sterilizing/disinfecting instruments, setting up equipment and supplies, and preparing specimens, as directed.


Essential Duties

Under the general supervision of the Chief Forensics Investigator, the Autopsy Technician will:

Weigh and measure human remains

Photograph organs and prepare toxicology samples; blood, urine, and vitreous fluids

Performs limited autopsies

Draw biological fluid samples

Maintain confidentiality of information on all cases; abides by HIPAA Rules

Maintain safety and cleanliness of the morgue and its associated equipment

Assist forensic pathologist with autopsies, weight descendants, weighing organs, sewing up bodies, proper packaging and labeling of evidence to preserve the chain of custody evidence

Eviscerate cadavers

Maintain inventory and supplies

Contacting funeral homes regarding release and picking up of decedents

Assist in training of others as required

Performs other job-related duties as assigned


Qualifications

Minimum of a high school diploma or GED, EMT or nursing degree preferred, may be able to substitute experience for degree

2 years of experience in a medical field such as nursing, surgical technology or experience working with autopsy procedures and practices, including evisceration

Knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology required

Ability to lift >50 lbs. and maneuver bodies of 300 lbs. or more independently or with assistance

Ability to handle foul odors

Manual dexterity

Able to operate and load a stretcher

Must be able to work any shift as necessary in a 24 hour period, including weekends and holidays

Strong writing and oral communication skills

Must submit to a drug test upon hire and random drug testing throughout employment

Ability to pass security background check
