Summary

Maintains a classroom environment aligned with adult learning theories and practice to prepare students to pass the GED or equivalent examination. The instructor must be able to communicate reading language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies principals by preparing lessons that promotes the students improved basic aptitude.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Provides classroom instruction in the areas of Literacy through GED test preparation subjects including career planning, social adjustment, and general life skills information.

Able to differentiate instruction for differing ability levels.

Maintains records including testing, attendance and general record keeping.

Evaluates and maintains inmate academic progress.

Provides individual tutoring.

Maintain daily roster to fill classroom capacity.

Performs other duties as assigned


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required.

Two (2) years of relevant teaching experience, public or private.

Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or Special Requirements: Teaching Certification from the PA Department of Education.


Working Conditions

Standard jail facility and office environment. Incumbent may be involved in sitting and walking at will, walking/standing and/or sitting for long periods, lifting/ carrying heavy objects, crouching/kneeling, bending at the waist, close and far vision, reaching, handling/ grasping/fingering objects, hearing sounds/communication. Incumbent is frequently exposed to the hazards associated with jail operations, such as potentially violent individuals and communicable disease. No prolonged extreme physical demands are associated with normal duties or assignments.
