The Heritage Commission of Delaware County was formed by a resolution of the Delaware County Council on June 21, 1977. The Commission is charged with coordinating and promoting the cultural heritage of Delaware County. It is composed of 11 members appointed by County Council who serve in a volunteer basis. They meet once a month and are led by a chairman and vice chairman elected by the members. The Delaware County Planning Department provides staff services for the Commission.

MISSION

The mission of the Heritage Commission of Delaware County is to oversee the rich heritage of Delaware County and support those organizations within the County who are promoting and preserving our cultural legacy. They accomplish this mission through outreach within the historic communities of Delaware County as well as providing a resource base for these organizations and individuals.

Annual Preservation Awards

The Commission has traditionally sponsored the Annual Preservation Awards each May during National Preservation month. Held during the first County Council Meeting in May, a presentation is made and framed certificate awarded to those who have contributed to retaining and maintaining our County’s heritage through a construction project, a special program or project or a publication. An individual who has contributed significantly to our heritage is also recognized. In addition, the Leedom B. Morrison Award recognizes a construction project in Chester City.

SEMINARS AND WORKSHOPS

In an effort to provide heritage awareness and preservation education for citizens of Delaware County, the Commission periodically sponsors seminars and workshops. Past subjects include restoring and maintaining historic homes, historic landscaping, interpreting and funding historic sites, and preservation strategies.
