Home / Departments / Public Relations Releases / County of Delaware Network Security Incident Update

Released: December 2, 2020

The County of Delaware is providing an update on the recent disruption to certain portions of its computer network. The County has worked tirelessly, including through the holiday, to respond to the event. Under the guidance of the computer forensic specialists, the County has restored critical systems and is strengthening the security of our network. While our investigation into the event is ongoing, we appreciate the patience and understanding of those impacted and the commitment from Delaware County employees to assist in the response and restoration.

The investigation is ongoing, but we have determined that the issues were caused by malware identified on certain systems that impacted our ability to access certain files on servers and devices throughout our system. We commenced an immediate investigation into the issues to determine the full nature and scope of this incident and restore our network to full functionality. This investigation includes working with third-party forensic specialists to assist with these efforts and determine what company information or employee information may have been impacted.

As our restoration is ongoing, we will continue to update network security processes, and change passwords as needed.

The confidentiality, privacy, and security of information in our care is one of our highest priorities. As part of our investigation, we are assessing impact on the integrity of data on our systems and will continue to work to evaluate the protections in place to protect that information.
