Scheduled Hours: variable shifts; overtime required as needed


Summary

Medical Investigators work for medical examiners' offices, gathering and examining evidence to determine the cause of death in criminal cases and unnatural or unattended deaths. They may be present at the scene of the death to ensure that collected evidence gets safely transported to the laboratory for analysis.


Essential Duties

Under the direction of the Director, the Medical Examiner Investigator I:

Receives reports of deaths from physicians and other medical workers, police, funeral directors, family or other persons. Determines if case is within legal jurisdiction of the Medical Examiner. Prepares written documentation of reported deaths

Conducts investigations of deaths including interviewing, compiling reports, visiting scenes of death or injury, and collecting evidence

Secures physical scientific and pathological evidence at death scenes

Takes death scene photographs

Transports or coordinates transport of dead body from scene of death

Verifies identity of decedent and notifies next of kin

Controls death scene investigation; cooperates with law enforcement agencies in criminal cases

Takes inventory of decedent's property and coordination for property protection

Prepares reports of investigative findings; prepares death certificates, property forms, release forms, evidence inventories and related documents

Testifies in depositions and court relating to investigative findings

Other duties as assigned


Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent

Experience as a morgue tech or autopsy tech

Knowledge of human anatomy

Knowledge of and skill in the utilization of radiological techniques

Knowledge of health and safety standards and practices

Ability to lift and move deceased individuals and be able to lift safely up to 100 pounds

Strong computer skills

Strong verbal and written communication skills

Strong attention to detail

Able to exercise independent judgement

Residence Requirement: The County of Delaware has a residency requirement for employees. Anyone applying for this job must reside in Delaware County or be willing to move to the County within six months of starting employment.
